We are proud to announce Maria Abranches as the 2025 Inglewood Photography Festival Book Grant recipient for her project Here is Maria. A Portuguese documentary photographer focused on human rights, Maria transitioned from architecture to photojournalism after studying analog photography at ArCo and interning at Público.Her work explores Portuguese colonialism, as seen in Pele Escura (2021) and Trançar o Mundo (2022), a project on African hair heritage. Here is Maria was developed during the Masterclass Narrativa with World Press Photo winner Mário Cruz and has earned international recognition, including the Cortona On The Move Award 2024.Maria’s work, featured in Público, Reuters, The Guardian, and more, amplifies marginalized voices.
